BUNN coffee maker is acknowledged for its durability and reliability. BUNN is known to produce commercial-grade coffee makers.  It is undoubtedly one of the most visible brands you’ll see in many large food service companies. Obviously, this is what we like about BUNN. They’ve designed their home coffee makers to make coffee at home the way our favorite cafe makes coffee.

To understand how a BUNN coffee maker works, let us first talk about the features that all BUNN coffee makers have.

Commercial Grade Water Tank

Have you ever wondered how coffee shops prepare delicious-tasting coffee fast? It’s because they have an internal water tank that keeps hot water at the recommended temperature of 200°F. Undoubtedly, this assures a steady supply of hot water at a precise temperature for a great-tasting coffee. And, BUNN has incorporated this feature into its home coffee makers.

Drip-Free Carafe

All BUNN coffee makers have a proprietary lid and spout design.  When you pour coffee into the cup, the rest wicks back into the carafe instead of dripping, preventing a mess on the cup or counter.

To illustrate BUNN’s Drip-Free Carafe, let us take a look at this video by BUNN.

Fast Brewing

Because water is already at its ideal temperature for brewing, the time to brew coffee is greatly reduced. Thus, avoiding the bitter taste caused by long brewing. Undeniably, this results in an excellent taste of brewed coffee.

BUNN speed brew coffee makers can brew 50oz in just four minutes. Significantly, almost half the time other coffee makers brew coffee.

Designed and assembled in the USA

One of the few coffee makers that you can call an American brand. Without a doubt, assuring you of its quality and reliability.

3-Year Warranty

As proof of confidence in their products, all BUNN coffee makers come with a 3-year warranty. This gives you enough peace of mind that if anything goes wrong with your BUNN coffee maker, you can always email or call BUNN’s customer service to solve your problem.

We’ve chosen the best BUNN home coffee makers to help you decide which BUNN coffee maker is best for you.

BUNN BT BT Speed Brew 10-Cup Thermal Carafe Home Coffee Brewer

Therefore, the absence of a thermal plate. Henceforth, preventing the burnt bitter taste for a great-tasting cup of coffee that you’ll truly enjoy. Ninja coffee maker is increasingly getting popular. So, let’s take a look at the best brewer Ninja has in line. And, what they can offer.

Let me start with a question: Why do we invest in a coffee maker?

Probably, your first answer will be for convenience. True enough, it is far less hustle to prepare our own coffee than to drive to the coffee shop, wait in line to order, and for it to be served. Secondly, to save. We undeniably save more of our hard-earned dollars by brewing our own coffee. Moreover, we save valuable time with our coffee maker. Basically, these are the main reasons why we choose to invest in a coffee machine at home.

In general, we can classify the different models of Ninja Coffee Makers into three categories, namely:

  1. Dual Brew – capable of brewing both grounds and coffee pods.
  2. Hot and Cold Brew System – can brew both grounds and tea.
  3. Specialty Coffee Maker – only brews grounds.

Best Ninja DualBrew Series

Ninja CFP301 DualBrew Pro System

This coffee machine gives you the flexibility to brew coffee grounds or coffee pods. If you are a K-cup fanatic, this coffee brewer will surely be on top of your list. It is the first Ninja coffee machine to brew a K-cup. On the side, I wonder what’s with “K-” that seems to make something that starts with “K-…” nowadays popular. We have K-pop, K-cup, K-Swiss. Haven’t you noticed that? Well, back to Ninja Dual Brew. You can brew from your favorite pod a 6, 8, 10, and 12 oz brew. And, as we always recommend, you can brew your favorite freshly ground coffee for the best coffee taste using this awesome brewer. Consequently, you can choose from Small Cup, Cup, XL Cup, Travel Mug, XL Travel Mug, ¼ Carafe, ½ Carafe, ¾ Carafe, or Full Carafe. So, you’ll have more coffee or tea for everybody.

Moreover, Ninja CFP301 gives you the option to choose 4 brew styles. You can brew a Classic, Rich, Over Ice, or Specialty coffee from grounds or pods. Specialty Brew is a super-rich coffee concentrate. It’s not espresso. But, somehow close to it. However, we can say it’s Ninja’s espresso version as you can use it to create delicious lattes, macchiatos, cappuccinos, and other coffeehouse-style drinks. It also has a built-in, fold-away frother to take your coffee or tea to a different dimension. Frothing takes your beverage to another level when making espresso-based drinks or shall I say specialty brew-based drinks for Ninja. It adds richness and texture to your milk. You’ll find very few home coffee makers with this kind of feature.

Added features:

What I like more about the Ninja CFP301 is its independent water system. It has 2 temperature settings – hot and boil.  This type of water system allows you to make coffee, tea, hot cocoa, oatmeal, instant soup, and more. Moreover, the removable 60-oz. reservoir (12 cups) can be placed on the side or at the back of the brewer to save on space.

Ninja CFP301 DualBrew

Ninja CFP301 DualBrew Pro System 12-Cup Coffee Maker

Best Ninja Hot and Cold Brewed System

Ninja CP307 Hot and Cold Brewed System, Auto-iQ Tea and Coffee Maker

The Ninja CP307 brews both grounds and tea. And you can brew Classic, Rich, Over Ice, Cold Brew, and Specialty coffee. You also have the option to choose from the 6 brew sizes: Cup, XL Cup, Travel Mug, XL Travel Mug, 1/2 Carafe, and Full Carafe. Moreover, it has a Smart basket recognition: System recognizes the basket and displays coffee or tea drink options. The CP307 also has separate coffee and tea baskets. So, you can brew coffee or loose or bagged tea to keep flavors separate.

With the CP307, you can brew directly into a cup any brand of coffee or tea, loose-leaf, or bagged. Select your tea type and the system knows the temperature and number of steeps needed. Another cool feature of this coffee brewer is its Built-in, Fold-Away Frother.  This coffee brewer doesn’t have a warming plate as it has a 50 Ounces (10 cups) thermal carafe that will keep your coffee and tea hot for up to 2 hours. So, it’s more economically friendly.

Ninja CP307 Hot and Cold Brewed System

Ninja CP307 Hot and Cold Brewed System, Auto-iQ Tea and Coffee Maker

Ninja CP301 Hot and Cold Brewed System, Auto-iQ Tea and Coffee Maker

Ninja’s CP301 has the same features as the CP307. The only difference is the carafe and the warming plate. If CP307 has a thermal carafe, CP307 on the other hand uses a glass carafe. And, a warming plate to keep your coffee hot. But, of course, this coffee machine uses more electricity due to its warming plate. But, aesthetically more classic looking. So, if you’re conscious of design, you can go for CP301 as it will look better on your countertop as compared with a thermal carafe.

Ninja CP301 Hot and Cold Brewed

Ninja CP301 Hot and Cold Brewed System, Auto-iQ Tea and Coffee Maker

Best Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker

Ninja CM401 Specialty 10-Cup Coffee Maker

The Ninja CM401 is only for coffee grounds. So, if you’re not a tea drinker, this coffee machine might be best for you. You can easily brew Classic, Rich, Over Ice, and Specialty coffee with its easy-to-use dial selector.  Cold coffee lovers can brew flavorful iced coffee that’s never watered down. And, you can brew Ninja’s espresso-style coffee concentrate to create delicious lattes, macchiatos, cappuccinos, and other coffeehouse-style drinks. It also has a removable 50-oz. (10 cups) water reservoir for easy filling.

CM 401 has a glass carafe and a warming plate that automatically shuts down after one hour of inactivity. This coffee brewer will take your coffee to a different level with its Built-in, Fold-Away Frother for that silky-smooth froth. There’s no need for pods with the Ninja CM401. Just your favorite coffee grounds.

Ninja CM401 Specialty CoffeeNinja CM401 Specialty Coffee Maker

Ninja CM407 Specialty Coffee Maker

CM407 has the same features as the CM401. Except that this coffee machine has a thermal carafe that will keep your coffee hot for hours after brewing. Thermal carafes are also more durable as compared with glass carafes. While they are more initially expensive than glass carafes, we find the increased cost worth it.

Overall, glass carafes are more beautiful to see on the countertop than thermal carafes. If you’re the type of coffee drinker who usually drinks your coffee after brewing, then go for the CM407. On the other side, if you are the type of coffee drinker who usually loves brewing a pot of coffee in the morning for your full-day consumption or for a bigger number of coffee drinkers, go for CM401.

Always remember, while glass carafes have a warming plate to keep coffee hot, they usually produce a burnt or bitter taste over time while your coffee sits on the warming plate for a longer time.

Best Basic Ninja Coffee Brewer

Now, let’s get down to the basic models of Ninja coffee makers. The CE251 and CE201 resemble each other in features. And, has a striking resemblance in looks. So, let’s talk about their similarities and differences.

Similarities

Hotter Brewing Technology

They have an advanced broiler for a perfect cup of coffee.

Programmable Delay Brew

You can program the CE251 and CE201 24 hours in advance to brew your favorite cup of coffee. So, wake up revitalized from the aroma and taste of a perfectly brewed coffee.

Adjustable Warming Plate

Keep your coffee fresh and hot for up to 4 hours without the taste of burnt coffee. The Warming Plate auto-shutoff after 2 hours.

Flavor Straw

I like this feature so much as it circulates coffee while brewing. This process ensures uniformity in the taste of every cup of coffee as it mixes the coffee while brewing. It’s like stirring your coffee while brewing it until it pours in your cup. A brilliant feature that is present on Ninja Coffee Makers.

Removable Water Reservoir

A 60-oz. removable water reservoir is removable. You can conveniently take it to your sink for easy filling.

Small Batch Setting

Both the CE251 and CE201 were designed to brew small batches (1-4 cups) of coffee that is as flavorful as a full carafe.

Carafe Size

The carafe can hold 12 cups of great-tasting coffee. So, you’ll have enough coffee for your guests or the whole family of coffee lovers.

Mid-Brew Pause

Are you in a rush and can’t wait for the brewer to finish brewing a full carafe? Don’t worry, you can just pull out the carafe and pour yourself a cup or your favorite coffee.\

Permanent Filter

You don’t have to spend on disposable coffee filters. The easy-to-clean permanent filter makes both the CE251 and CE201 more economical for long-term use.

Differences

There’s not much difference in looks aside from the entirely black panel of the CE201. The major difference is in the materials that were used for these coffee makers. The CE251 is entirely made of plastic. While the CE201 is made of plastic, metal, and rubber.

Ninja CE251 Programmable Brewer

The CE251 is made of plastic. This makes it lightweight compared to CE201.

The Best Keurig Coffee Makers…are they really best? Honestly speaking, we don’t recommend coffee prepared with a Keurig Coffee Maker. While we have nothing against Keurig, it’s the process and the end product in using this coffee maker that is not really recommendable. To tell you honestly, it doesn’t produce a great cup of coffee. Add the environmental impact that disposable pods have on the environment. In fact, I have asked myself several times: Why is there’s so much interest in the Keurig?

Believe us, there’s nothing compared with a freshly prepared, and freshly brewed cup of coffee. If you want to have the best coffee, freshly grind whole coffee beans that are brewed right immediately is the secret.

But, in this fast-changing world where everybody seems to be in a hurry, Keurig has given the convenience that the masses have been looking for in preparing their cup of coffee. A lot of people are now choosing convenience that might give “good enough” results as compared to achieving the “best results” that require more effort. It’s like choosing fast food than home-prepared food.

In view thereof, so as to guide our readers, we are giving you our straightforward recommendations for the Best Keurig Coffee Makers.

THE BOTTOM LINE

There are our Best Keurig Coffee Makers.

Keurig is a genius in offering convenience and good coffee to coffee lovers. Their machines are undoubtedly easy to use and are great pieces on any countertop. However, there’s no better than freshly ground and freshly prepared coffee. But, of course, you need to exert more time and effort to prepare your great-tasting cup of joe.

We know Keurig is doing its best to address the environmental impact of its K-Cup. And, we have to give them a credit for that. They probably didn’t expect themselves that their K-Cups will be a great hit worldwide. And, you can’t blame them for using plastic as it’s probably the best solution to offer their product. And, it’s legally accepted to be used on food and beverages. But, generally speaking, how long are we going to wait for a solution to plastic waste? Even John Sylvan, the inventor of K-Cup, regrets creating a non-recyclable Keurig coffee pod.

In the end, it’s your personal choice. If Keurig serves your taste and needs, go for it. And, to do your part in taking care of the environment, we encourage you to Go Green by Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling.

Have you ever thought of finding the best coffee brewing methods that will fit your personality, lifestyle, and taste preference? Probably, you hadn’t thought of that, just like when I started to love drinking coffee. My coffee maker is the best companion I have for that great cup of Joe. And, that’s it. I believe I make the best coffee in the world!

But, as I got to taste other brews and seemed to like their coffee better, I started asking myself, how did they make that coffee? It’s better than what I’ve been brewing. So, this curiosity leads me to find, learn and discover more about coffee.

Coffee is prepared in various ways using different brewing methods. Many have asked me, what is the best-tasting coffee in the world? And, my always answer is, It depends on who’s drinking because we have our unique taste preferences. For instance, what might be best for me might not be your liking. On the other hand, what might be best for you might be the worse coffee ever for me. In other words, what is best for you is the best coffee in the world!

Most importantly, there will surely be a coffee brewing method to produce the perfect coffee for you. So please read on, as I am excited to share my coffee exploration experience because every sip of coffee has been great with these coffee brewing methods.

Basic Principles in Coffee Brewing Methods

To better understand the different brewing methods, it is crucial to know the basic principle behind them.  Consequently, coffee brewing uses the tenets of Boiling, Steeping, Pressure, and Dripping/Filtration.

It is important to note that freshness should always be your standard in brewing whatever coffee brewing method you choose.

For every brewing method, prepare the following:

Coffee Beans

Best Fresh Whole Beans for any Coffee Brewing Methods

Best Fresh Whole Coffee Beans

Order them in small quantities so that you could have fresh coffee beans weekly for optimum flavor. It is best to grind the coffee beans as close as possible to brewing as ground coffee loses its optimum flavor after 15 to 20 minutes of grinding.

Store coffee beans in a dark or opaque, air-tight container at room temperature. I have seen others put the coffee beans on a clear jar several times, as it’s beautiful to see it displayed in a coffee station. But, this is not proper as light can penetrate the pot, cause the beans’ photodegradation, and make it stale, losing its freshness and flavor.

It is also advisable to store beans in several smaller containers. Rather than keep them in one big container. Because the beans are also affected by air, frequent opening of a big container’s lid will hurt the quality of the beans. Therefore, storing them in several containers will lessen the air exposure of the other beans.

Water

Brita Water Purifier for any Coffee Brewing MethodsBest Water Purifier for Coffee

Let’s not be too technical on this. To simply put it, It would be better to use filtered water. It’s worth investing in a water purifier like the Brita water purifier. You can also use bottled water. We, however, don’t recommend using distilled water or reverse osmosis as it’s so pure. It is the minerals in water that retains the coffee’s flavor. Minerals also prevent leeching flavors from the container. Due to the lack of minerals, distilled water might absorb a container’s taste like plastic, or worse, absorb the chemicals from the plastic. Thus, affecting the coffee’s taste.

Equipment

Whatever equipment you’ll be using, always make sure that it is clean before and after using it.

The Coffee Brewing Methods

Brewing Methods using Boiling

Boiling here refers to the principle of putting water and coffee over a flame or a heat source. Always remember, do not boil coffee. Never do that. When brewing, the ideal water temperature is between 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit (90.55 to 96.11 degrees Celsius).

Colder water will result in flat, under-extracted coffee. In contrast, water that is too hot will over-extract coffee grounds. As a result, a bitter coffee. At the same time, it is essential to note that cold brew does not need any heat.

Cowboy Coffee

Cowboy Coffee is a classic American way of coffee brewing. This brewing method is my uncle’s favorite. According to him, there’s no other brew better than Cowboy Coffee.

Best Coffee Pot/Kettle for Cowboy Coffee Brewing MethodsBest Cowboy Coffee Kettle

Cowboy Coffee Brewing Procedure:

  1. Put water into your pot. Six ounces of water for every serving/cup. Add 3/4 cup of water for every two servings of coffee since some will be left behind with the coffee grounds when you transfer the coffee.
  2. Add two tablespoons of fresh coffee ground into the pot for every serving/cup of coffee.
  3. For the old-fashioned way, you can put the pot over a campfire. But, of course, a more convenient way to do it at home is to put it over the stove.
  4. Let it boil for two minutes. After which, remove the kettle from the heat.
  5. Meanwhile, allow the coffee grounds to settle at the bottom of the pot in 4 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle it with cold water to help the sediments/grounds to sink to the bottom.
  7. Slowly pour the pot contents into your mug, avoiding grounds to come with it as much as possible.

Turkish Coffee

Turkish Coffee Brewing Procedure:

  1. Pour two cups of water into the cezve (a wide-bottomed pot, usually made of copper). The cup measurement is the cup you’re going to use to serve the coffee.
  2. Then, add coffee and sugar (if desired). Use a heaping tablespoon of coffee for every cup of coffee. Mix well to dissolve the coffee and sugar. Do not stir after this point.
  3. Place the cezve on the stovetop, and slowly bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Keep a close eye on it; after a few minutes, the coffee will rise and foam up.
  4. It is a tradition to serve Turkish coffee with foam on top. So, just before it begins to boil, remove the cezve from the heat. Next, use a spoon to skim off the foam, distributing it to each serving cup. Afterward, return the cezve to the heat and let it slowly foam up again.
  5. As the coffee comes to a boil, pour half of the coffee very slowly into the serving cups filling each cup halfway over the foam.
  6. Return the cezve to the heat and let it slowly foam up again. Then, pour the remaining coffee into the rim of the cup.
  7. Let the coffee settle for a few minutes. Serve and enjoy.

Steeping Coffee Brewing Method

Probably the simplest of the coffee brewing methods. Just pour boiling water over ground coffee. Allow the two to get together on the ideal or desired brewing time. Then, separate the coffee grounds from the brew. That easy!

French Press

Best for French Press Coffee Brewing MethodsBest French Press

Let me share James Hoffman’s approach in French Press brewing. This technique is unique but produces a great-tasting coffee.

What to Prepare for the Jeff Hoffman’s French Press Technique?

  1. As Jehh Hoffman says, “Be Patient. Never rush things. You won’t neglect to wait a bit for that great cup of coffee.”
  2. Prepare Fresh Coffee Beans. A French Press will work with pre-ground coffee. But, not as delicious as freshly ground coffee beans.
  3. Start with 60 to 70 grams of freshly ground coffee beans per liter of water.
  4. Get a Digital Weighing Scale.
  5. Use Fresh Filtered Water.
  6. Use a clean French Press.

The Jeff Hoffman’s French Press Technique Brewing Procedure:

  1. Grind your fresh coffee beans. Most techniques go for the coarse grind. On the other hand, Jeff Hoffmann’s approach goes for the medium grind. Then, put the 30 grams of ground coffee in the French Press.
  2. Add water—500 grams of water to 30 grams of coffee.
  3. Let it sit for 4 minutes.
  4. Grab a tablespoon. Stir the crust that forms on the top of the coffee with a spoon. You’ll see a lot of it will start to fall while some bits will stay on top. Scoop them off.
  5. Then, do nothing for at least 5 minutes. After that, you’ll see all floating bits fall and settle at the bottom of the press.
  6. After 5 to 8 minutes, put the plunger. Do not plunge it all the way, as this will stir up everything again. Instead, dip it slowly just to let it sit on the surface of the coffee. Then, pour the coffee gently into your cup.

Soft Brew

One of the coffee brewing methods that I like because of the simplicity and effortless brewing it offers. More than that, it produces an excellent cup of coffee. If you want to experience the distinct taste of single-origin coffee, go for the soft brew. We recommend not adding milk for you to experience the different distinct flavors of coffee fully.

Soft Brew Brewing Procedures:

  1. Put your desired amount of freshly coarse-grind coffee into the metal filter.
  2. Measurement is two tablespoons of coffee for every 6 oz. of water. That’s 13 tablespoons for a full carafe of coffee.
  3. Add water that is around 200°F/93°C by slowly pouring it into the carafe. If you don’t have a thermometer, you take off the water from the heat once it boils and allow it to cool for 1 minute.
  4. Then, after 4 to 8 minutes for hot coffee, remove the filter. For cold brew, leave it overnight. Finally, pour the coffee over a cup and enjoy that great cup of coffee.

Coffee Bag

Coffee Bag is one of the most convenient coffee brewing methods that require no special equipment. There are single-serve coffee bags that you can buy today. But, for a better-tasting coffee, we recommend using freshly ground coffee beans.

Coffee Bag for Coffee Bag Coffee Brewing Methods

Coffee Bag

Coffee Bag Brewing Procedure:

  1. Put two tablespoons of freshly ground coffee in a disposable coffee bag.
  2. Boil water and allow it to cool for 1 minute.
  3. Fill your favorite cup with water. And, dip a coffee bag just like a teabag.
  4. Leave it for 10-15 seconds, then give it a squeeze and a stir.
  5. Let it brew around 3-5 minutes, but feel free to experiment until you find your sweet spot.
  6. You can add milk and sugar.
  7.  Directly throw away the coffee bag with the coffee ground.

Brewing Method that uses Pressure

These coffee brewing methods use high pressure to extract finely ground coffee to produce a great-tasting cup of coffee. The ideal time of extraction is between 10 to 20 seconds. It is mainly used in AeroPress, Moka pot, and the traditional espresso method.

Espresso

Espresso is a coffee brewing method that originated in Italy. Ironically, espresso is both a brewing method and a coffee beverage. It is a concentrated form of coffee, generally thicker than other coffee brewed with other methods. Espresso is served using a demitasse cup in small, strong shots with its crema on top, a brown foam with a creamy consistency. The crema adds a rich flavor and a lingering after-taste of the espresso. Espresso is also the base for many coffee drinks like caffè latte, cappuccino, caffè macchiato, caffè mocha, flat white, and caffè Americano. It can be made from any origins coffee and from any roast but is stronger, thicker, and higher in caffeine per unit volume due to its brewing process. However, espresso has lesser caffeine per serving as it is served in a smaller cup (demitasse cup) and not on a standard coffee mug.

This method is done using an espresso machine. Pressurized water gets pushed through a tamped basket of fine ground coffee beans and results in a shot of espresso.

Espresso Machine Coffee Brewing MethodsBest Home Espresso Machine

Espresso Brewing Procedure

1. Prepare the Cup

Warm the cup by rinsing it with hot water before using it. This will help prevent your coffee to cool down upon impact.

2. Clean the Portafilter

Make sure that your portafilter handle is clean and dry. Double-check for any old coffee residue as this will affect the taste of your new espresso. A wet basket will affect extraction, as it will make the coffee moist.

3. Grind the Beans

Grind your coffee beans. A fine grind is perfect for espresso. Grind setting is important as too coarse coffee grind will result in an under-extracted coffee that tastes sour. On the other hand, over-extracted coffee usually brought by extremely fine grind will be bitter. If you have a calibrated on-demand grinder, then it’s easy to check the dose. If not, it’s best to use a scale.

4. Use a Weighing Scale  for an accurate dose

Dose your fine ground coffee into your portafilter. Espresso is most commonly made in a “double-shot” with a dose between 14 – 18 grams. But, for a newbie, it’s always better to start at 14 grams. And, as you familiarize yourself with brewing espresso you can experiment on doses higher than 14 grams until you find your personal choice. It is advisable to use a scale for an accurate dose. As a guide, a single shot (30 ml)of espresso uses around 7-9 grams of fine ground coffee, a double or “doppio” (60 ml) is 14-18 grams, and a triple or “triplo” (90 ml) rounds at 21-24 grams.

Coffee Weighing ScaleBest Coffee Weighing Scale

5. Tamp the ground in the Portafilter

Distribute the grounds evenly by tamping or compacting the grounds into the filter with a tamper. This will ensure the even extraction of the grounds.  Hold your elbow at 90 degrees, rest your portafilter on a level surface and then apply pressure that is hard enough to press out the air pockets until the coffee has an even.

6. Polish the grounds

Before removing the tamper, polish the surface of the ground coffee by spinning the tamper. This will ensure that the top of the coffee is smooth and flat. Then, take off the tamper gently to avoid suctioning the coffee puck.

Espresso Coffee Tamper

7. Clean the Portafilter before putting it back

Wipe the portafilter before inserting it to make sure that there’s no excess dry coffee on its surface.

Don’t forget to clean the group head before inserting the portafilter – you can flush it with water or brush it if needed. This is to make sure that old coffee particles are removed from the showerhead. Because it will have a significant effect on your espresso’s taste if it gets into it.

8. Brew the Espresso

Finally, insert the portafilter handle into the group head and start brewing your espresso! Make sure to begin brewing immediately to prevent the heat to burn the coffee’s surface.

9. SERVE!
Things to do after brewing the espresso shot
  1. Remove the portafilter and knock the coffee puck out into the knock box. Don’t forget this step!
  2. Don’t forget to clean and rinse your handle again and make sure to fry it to be ready for the next shot.
  3. Rinse and brush the group head. You have to remove oils or particles that could spoil your next shot.
  4. Lastly, put the portafilter back into the group head.  It’s always better to be clean, organized, and ready for more brewing.

Moka Pot

A Moka Pot is one of the simplest and most inexpensive coffee brewing methods. This makes it one of the most popular coffee makers you’ll find in most homes especially in Europe. And, is said to be an inexpensive espresso alternative. But, does Moka pot really makes an espresso? The answer is NO. Moka pot produces a strong and concentrated coffee that is usually compared to espresso. But, the main difference between brewing coffee with the Moka pot and an Espresso machine is the intense pressure that an Espresso machine produces to brew the coffee.

While there are now many companies that produce the Moka Pot, the original company that invented and produces the Moka Pot (Bialetti Moka Pot) still manufactures it. If you want a nostalgic Moka Pot, go for the original on the below link.

Original Moka Pot by Bialetti

Moka Pot

Moka Pot Brewing Procedure

  1. First, grind your fresh whole coffee beans. About the size of table salt. You need to fill the basket with your freshly ground coffee, about 15 to 17 grams.
  2. Fill the filter basket with your freshly ground coffee. And, level it with your fingers. Don’t tamp it. Wipe the edges to make sure that the basket is clean.
  3. Next, fill the bottom chamber just below the valve with hot purified water. The technique in using hot water will prevent the grounds to be in contact for too long with the water which will result in an unpleasant taste of coffee. While, if you have no hot water, you can use normal temperature water. It’s just that this may result in a bitter or burnt taste.
  4. Insert the filled coffee basket into the lower chamber of the Moka Pot.
  5. Screw the top chamber and the bottom chamber together. Don’t forget that the bottom chamber is hot. So, use a towel or a potholder to hold it.
  6. Put the Moka Pot on the stove at medium heat. And, keep the lid open.
  7. As the pressure builds, you’ll see brewed coffee flowing in the middle of the pot. It will start to come out as rich dark color until it becomes lighter.
  8. When you hear the bubbling and cracking noises or when the coffee coming out turns to light honey color it is time for you to take it off from the heat source. Don’t forget to close the lid.
  9. Then, cool it down by placing a wet/cold towel on the bottom chamber or better placing the bottom chamber under running water.
  10. Pour into cups and enjoy your coffee.

Aeropress

The AeroPress is a manual coffeemaker that looks like a big syringe. It was invented by Alan Adler, founder of AeroPress, Inc.  Ground coffee beans and water are steeped inside, then a plunger is pressed gently to separate the coffee from the grounds as the pressure that builds up in the chamber forces the coffee to pass by the filter to produce a smooth and clean coffee.

Aeropress Brewing Procedure

  1. Boil 250ml. of purified water.
  2. Insert a paper filter into AeroPress’s detachable plastic cap. And, rinse the filter and the cap with hot water. This warms up the cap and somehow sterilized it. Please be careful in doing this step as you might burn your fingers. Carefully hold the edges of the cap while pouring the hot water.AeroPress Micro-FiltersAeroPress Micro Filters
  3. Assemble your AeroPress. Twist the filter cap into the chamber. Making sure that it is dry and clean. Then, put it into your cap.
  4. Weigh around 14 grams of Fresh Whole Coffee Beans and Grind (Medium -Fine Grind) to a texture slightly finer than sea salt.

  5. Put your coffee grounds into the AeroPress. And, slowly shake it to level off the grounds.
  6. Slowly pour hot water into the AeroPress up to number one level. Kindly take note that each number on the AeroPress chamber corresponds to the number of cups to make. The ratio is 1:1. That is 1 scoop of coffee = 1 level of water on the chamber.
  7. Stir for about 10 seconds.
  8. Insert the plunger and push it gently. Pausing when you feel strong resistance, then resumes after 2 seconds until the plunger reaches the grounds.
  9. Remove the filter cap. Then, push the plunger to eject the coffee puck and the filter.
  10. You can drink as is espresso-style or add water to make an 8 oz. (237 ml.) of American coffee. For Latte, you can add milk to make an 8 oz. (237 ml.) latte.
  11. Enjoy your excellent cup of coffee!
  12. Don’t forget to clean your AeroPress by rinsing it in preparation for your next brew.

Points to consider in Aeropress Brewing

The AeroPress maker recommends water temperature for Dark Roast at 175°F (80°C), and 185°F (85°C) for Medium and Light Roast Coffee Beans.

According to them, these water temperatures deliver smooth, rich brews without the bitterness and acidity that come with using hotter water.

Although we recommend that you try brewing at different temperatures as your personal taste will tell which is the best for your preference. Many coffee lovers I know prefer 195ºF (90.5ºC). If you don’t have a thermometer, once the water boils. take it off the heat source and let it stand for a couple of minutes before pouring.

To learn more from the Aeropress brewing method, let’s watch AeroPress inventor Alan Adler’s video demonstrating the wonderful AeroPress Brewing Technique:

Most common questions about coffee

How long is coffee good for after brewing?

You should drink your coffee right after brewing to enjoy its best flavor. However, your coffee will lose its best flavor and aroma within 30 minutes after brewing or just when our coffee cools off due to oxidation.

Black coffee can last for a day at room temperature. But, don’t expect to have its best flavor as the longer the coffee is left out, the more flavor and aroma it loses due to oxidation. On the other hand, drink your coffee with milk within 1-2 hours after brewing. Milk is prone to bacterial growth. And, to prevent digestive discomfort, it’s better to take your coffee with milk while it’s fresh.

We suggest putting milk/creamier on your coffee before drinking it to keep your leftover coffee longer.

How to keep coffee fresh after brewing?

It would be better to keep your coffee in the fridge. Putting it in a cold place is the best way to keep it fresh. Use an airtight coffee mug to prevent your coffee from absorbing other aromas/flavors of different food items in your fridge that could alter your coffee’s taste.

Putting your coffee in the fridge also slows the deterioration of the coffee’s flavor and aroma.

How to measure ground coffee for brewing?

Don’t forget the “Golden Ratio” in coffee brewing, one to two tablespoons of ground coffee for every six ounces of water.

There are far great benefits to owning a coffee maker. Coffee lovers always want to prepare their cups of coffee by themselves, from choosing fresh whole coffee beans to grinding and finally making the best coffee ever.  Daily coffee preparation seems to be a ritual and a stress reliever for coffee lovers. But is a coffee maker vital to make that excellent cup of coffee? As you can make coffee without a coffee maker, the answer is NO, as we have shown you on our blog, How To Make Coffee Without A Coffee Maker. But, if you consider the convenience, preciseness, and economic side of using a coffee maker, owning and using one is essential.

The benefits of owning a coffee maker:

1. More convenient to have a Coffee Maker

Owning a coffee maker is a lot more convenient than going outside to run in a cafe every time you crave coffee. Imagine the time you consume on your trip to the coffee shop. The time you spend standing in line, ordering, paying, and waiting for your drink. You’d instead use that time on something more relevant. If you have a coffee maker at home, you can have your great cup of coffee any time of the day.

2. Owning a Coffee Maker is a Money-saver

You pay more when you pay for services than doing things you’re capable of doing, like brewing. So having a coffee maker and brewing your coffee at home will be less expensive than buying in a specialty coffee shop. Financial educators interestingly talk about  How much Can You Save by Brewing Your Own Coffee? and How to save money on good coffee and still support your local businesses. Savings between $600 – $1500 a year may not make you a rich person. But, saving is still a saving. Most importantly, don’t forget that this is just one commodity. If you add up your savings on your coffee expenses to your other household savings, it will make a significant impact on your financial freedom.

3. Having your Coffee Maker is more Environmentally Friendly

Earth is already sick because of trash. And, if we contribute by adding up on waste, global warming and other pandemic brought by unrecyclable garbage will keep on coming. Even materials marked recyclable can be misleading because not all are being recycled due to the lack of recycling facilities. Cups, plastic spoons, stirrers, straws, and clamshells that we get at coffee shops contribute to the waste we find in landfills, waterways, and oceans.

On the other hand, if we make our coffee at home, we use reusable and washable materials like our own coffee mug and spoon, stirrers. Thus, contributing significantly to waste reduction. Remember, the best way to reduce trash is not to produce trash at all.

4. You’re in control of your coffee with your Coffee Maker

You’re in control of your brew. You can experiment with flavors and brewing techniques to get the perfect mixture that fits your taste.

5. A Coffee Maker is a Stress reliever

Preparing a cup of coffee is a stress reliever to many. Many coffee home brewers find it enjoyable to try and create their coffee brew. They are experimenting with different flavors and creations.

We seem to all love coffee shops. Recent studies have found that we tend to increase our concentration in doing something inside the coffee shop by hearing people’s sounds chatting in the background. Moreover, the coffee aroma enlivens our mood and spirit. And mostly, that excellent coffee taste kicks in to start our day. Consequently, we sometimes wish to bring home the coffee shop with all the positive energy we get from it. Therefore, we are giving you fabulous yet straightforward ideas in Home Coffee Bar.

Today, we are going to show you how to recreate the coffee shop atmosphere in your home. Feel the same positive vibes you get in the coffee shop while you are at home. Of course, with the same excellent tasting coffee.

Before we start, it is essential to note that our goal is to recreate a coffee shop’s atmosphere. That is to say, not to copy the exact physical setup of a coffee shop. Consequently, we still like to maintain the homey feeling. And in addition, we combined it with the coffee shop atmosphere.

A Coffee Shop has a Coffee Bar/Coffee Station.

Select a spot in your home where you’re going to set up a home coffee bar or a coffee station. Space doesn’t have to be huge. Even if you have limited space, a small corner or area in your kitchen or basement can make up for a DIY Home Coffee Bar/Station. Moreover, a terrace will be a cozy place for an alfresco home coffee bar.

A. Countertop Coffee Bar

A section on your countertop where your coffee maker stands can be a perfect place for a Countertop Coffee Bar.

A mobile coffee station is a great way to entertain friends. Bring the coffee cart to the living room or the guest room. If you have a member in the family who loves coffee but has a movement disability or disorder, this is the perfect coffee bar to show them how much we care for them. Instead of just bringing them a cup of coffee, it is better to get the coffee cart closer to them and prepare that great cup of coffee in front of them –  be a Barista to your loved ones. Moreover, the love and care we show our loved ones combined with the coffee shop atmosphere will positively affect their emotional and mental state. It’s like bringing them out to a coffee shop which they have probably not done for a long time due to their physical inability.

  • Place the Mobile Cart in the kitchen or any available space in the house. A place where you can put it back after using it.
  • Fill the jars with the whole coffee beans, sugar, creamer, cinnamon, and biscotti.
  • Place the Coffee Maker and Coffee Grinder on the top level of the mobile cart. Consequently, we recommend using a smaller coffee grinder such as manual grinders if you are saving space. A portable electric coffee grinder will also do, but this type of grinder is usually a blade grinder. For better-tasting coffee, we suggest using a conical burr grinder. On the other hand, you can put your grinder on the kitchen countertop, grind your whole beans before using them, and then put them in the coffee jar. That way, you don’t have to bring the coffee grinder to the mobile cart.
  • Arrange your filled coffee jar/canister in a tray and put it on the second level of the mobile cart. On the other hand, you can place the jars/canisters on the second level even without a tray if they are secured to stay in place while moving the mobile cart.
  • If you have a condiments organizer, you can put it beside the coffee maker. Likewise, you can also set it beside the jars/canisters.
  • Safely put the coffee cups/ mugs in the coffee cart.
  • You can place a Coffee Bar Sign on where you station the Coffee Cart when not in use or a coffee frame on the mobile cart.

C. Another option for a Coffee Cart – A Keurig Coffee Cart

Having a cup of freshly ground coffee beans is still the best way to enjoy coffee at its best. The time you consume preparing that excellent coffee, especially if we do it for someone we love, is priceless.

However, some people are always on the go. Therefore, they have little time to prepare a cup of coffee. An alternative will be a Keurig Coffee Maker. It certainly provides convenience and requires lesser space as you don’t need a coffee grinder using it. If you are a busy person who has little time to prepare a cup of coffee, this might be what you need. You can have an excellent coffee in seconds. But less expensive than going to a coffee shop. Moreover, Keurig offers a variety of flavors with its K-Cup pods.

E. Personalized Home Coffee Bar

If you have enough space, you can put a Personalized Home Coffee Bar.  The design of a Personalized Home Coffee Bar is closer to the arrangement and the physical set-up of an actual coffee shop’s bar. But smaller and more of your personality, design-wise.

Things to prepare in a Personalized Home Coffee Bar:

  • Prepare the same materials as the Coffee Cart. But, this time, instead of using a coffee cart, make use of a bar or a more extended console.
  • In addition to the coffee maker, grinder, and Keurig coffee maker, you can put more coffee bar accessories such as candles and different brewing apparatus for specific brewing methods like Aeropress, Chemex, scale, kettle, milk frothing jug, etc.

  • You’ll need a chalkboard for that nostalgic authentic coffee shop bar design. And chalk for the coffee art.

How to make coffee without a coffee maker is not hard as you may think it is. Making a cup of coffee is easy.  Consequently, you don’t need fancy pieces of equipment to enjoy that tremendous and healthy cup of coffee. Above all, you can find the things you need in your kitchen.

How to make coffee with The Stovetop Method

Brewing your coffee using The Stovetop Method is probably the easiest and most convenient method of making coffee without a coffee maker. Above all, it doesn’t involve many materials to accomplish.

What you need:

  • Freshly Ground Coffee for better taste. The coffee ground is fresh until 20 minutes after grinding. Without a Grinder? Check our blog on Like Hacks in Grinding Coffee Beans Without A Grinder.
  • Stove
  • Kettle or a Saucepan
  • Spoon
  • Ladle
  • Mug

Persona Coffee Beans

Brewing Procedure:

  1. Firstly, put water into your saucepan. Please take note that every serving or cup is equivalent to 6 ounces of water. Add a little more water since some will be left behind when you transfer the coffee. So, for every two servings or two cups of coffee, add 3/4 cup of water.
  2. Secondly, put the heat to medium or high heat.
  3. Thirdly, when the water is boiling,  add two tablespoons of coffee for every 6 ounces of water (single serving) or every cup of coffee. You may add more coffee, depending on your preference.
  4. Fourthly, turn off the heat immediately.
  5. Fifthly, cover the pan and wait for four to five minutes to let all the grounds settle at the bottom. On the other hand, if the coffee grounds didn’t sink fully at the bottom, you sprinkle them with cold water to help them drop.
  6. Lastly, you can use a ladle to transfer the coffee into cups, or you can slowly pour the coffee off the top so that grounds stay at the bottom.
  7. You can also add sugar or cream if you want.

Combining The Stovetop Method w/ The Strainer Method

Coffee makers have a filtration system to separate the coffee grounds and produce clear and clean coffee. Please don’t get me wrong. When I say clean coffee, it means that there are no sediments or coffee grounds that go with your cup of coffee,

On the other hand, The Stovetop Method doesn’t involve filtering the coffee grounds. So even if we let the coffee ground settle in the bottom of the pot, there are unavoidable instances where coffee grounds sediments go with your coffee when you pour it into your cup.

Consequently, a better way is to combine the stovetop method with the filtration method.  This method is faster because separating the coffee grounds from the liquid is faster.

What you need for the Strainer Method:

A fine mesh or a double-mesh kitchen strainer.

Brewing Procedure:

  1. Follow the Brewing Procedure with The Stovetop Method from Steps 1 to 4.
  2. Put the kitchen strainer over your cup or mug.
  3. After turning off the heat, slowly pour the coffee into the strainer and your cup.
  4. You may add sugar or cream if you desire.
  5. Enjoy a clear, pure, freshly brewed coffee!

How to make coffee with a DIY Chemex

This method produces excellent coffee without the sediments mixing with your cup of coffee as it involves filtering the coffee grounds. It is undoubtedly a pleasurable way to enjoy that cup of Joe.

What you need:

  • Freshly Ground Coffee (medium-coarse)
  • Makeshift Filter: a Handkerchief, Cheesecloth, Kitchen Towel, or a Paper Towel. Although, it will be better if you have a standard paper filter.
  • Mason Jar, Big Mug, or a Tall Thick Glass that can withstand hot water.
  • Rubber band or Clip
  • Kettle or any utensil to boil water
  • Hot water just below boiling (see instructions below how to prepare this)

Steps in making the DIY Chemex:

  1. Place your makeshift filter over the jar/mug/glass.
  2. Gently press the center to create a pouch that will be enough for a serving of ground coffee.
  3. Fold the makeshift filter’s edges around the glass and secure it with the rubber band or clips. You now have a DIY Chemex!

Brewing Procedure:

  1. Boil around two cups of water. Once it reaches the boiling point, please remove it from the heat source. Then, let it stand for 30 seconds.
  2. Scoop a single-cup ground coffee into the filter. Simultaneously, you can gently shake the jar to distribute the coffee grounds in the filter evenly.
  3. Slowly pour water at the center of your coffee grounds, working your way out to the sides. Use just enough water to get the coffee grounds slightly wet. Wait 30 seconds for the coffee bloom – release of CO2, bubbles, and coffee expands when coffee grounds come in contact with water.
  4. Moreover, continue by slowly pouring the rest of the hot water around every 30 seconds, in about three to four increments. Indeed, it may take more time if your beans are fresh. Also, it depends on the thickness of your filter.
  5. Carefully remove the clips or the rubber band and the makeshift filter once all the water has seeped.
  6. Lastly, you can also add sugar or cream if you want.

Another way to make coffee with the DIY Chemex:

A more convenient way to do this is by using a disposable coffee filter easily accessible on Amazon. Just like the image below.

How to make coffee with the Cowboy Method

Cowboy Coffee is an old-fashioned American way to make coffee without a coffee maker. Cowboys have been brewing coffee even before the invention of many coffee equipments.

What you need:

  • Freshly Ground Coffee (Medium-Fine) – 2 tablespoons for every 6 ounces (cup) of water.
  • Campfire (Old-fashioned way) or Stove
  • Water
  • Pot, Kettle, or Pan
  • Mug or Cup

Cowboy Coffee Pot

Persona Coffee Beans

Brewing Procedure:

  1. Put water into your pot. Six ounces of water for every serving/cup. For every two servings or two cups of coffee, add 3/4 cup of water. Adding a little more water is essential since some will be left behind with the coffee grounds when you transfer the coffee.
  2. Add the fresh coffee ground into the pot—two tablespoons for every serving/cup of coffee.
  3. Put the pot over a campfire for the old-fashioned way. But, of course, a more convenient way to do it at home is to put it over the stove.
  4. Let it boil for two minutes. Then, remove the kettle from the heat.
  5. Meanwhile, allow the coffee grounds to settle at the bottom of the pot in 4 minutes.
  6. If some sediments/grounds remain on top, sprinkle it with cold water to help the sediments/grounds to sink to the bottom.
  7. Slowly pour the pot contents into your mug, avoiding grounds to come with it as much as possible.

How to make coffee with The Swedish Egg Method

You’re reading it right. The Swedish have a unique and exciting way to make their coffee using a raw egg. And, believe it or not, with the shell and all. It is also called Norwegian and Scandinavian coffee. Swedish coffee certainly might be the smoothest coffee you’ll ever have without using a coffee maker. The logic behind this method is that the egg white removes impurities from the coffee. As a result, it removes the bitterness and acidity from the coffee grounds. Therefore, enhancing the coffee’s taste. At the same time, this also results in a light, clear brew with a smooth texture that is easy to drink.

What you need:

  • 1 Fresh egg
  • Fresh Ground Coffee (Medium) – (1 to 1 ½ tbsp for one serving)
  • 1 Cup of Room-temperature water
  • 1 Cup of Ice cold water
  • Saucepan
  • A cup or small bowl
  • Filter (strainer, cheesecloth, or a handkerchief will do.

N.B. The ingredients above will make one cup of coffee. Therefore, multiply the quantities accordingly according to your need.

Brewing Procedure:

  1. Start boiling the room temperature water in a small saucepan or a pot.
  2. While boiling the water, crack the egg into a cup with the shell and all! And, stir.
  3. Add the fresh coffee ground to the egg and stir together thoroughly.
  4. When the water starts boiling, add the egg-coffee slurry.
  5. Let the mixture boils for 3 to 5 minutes. Keep your eye on it to prevent it from overflowing.
  6. When you see the slurry clumps and float on top, remove the pot from the heat source. Then, add 1  cup of ice-cold water into the mixture. Let it stand for a minute as the egg and coffee clumps sink to the bottom of the pot.
  7. While waiting for the mixture to steep, put your makeshift filter over your empty cup/mug.
  8. After a minute, slowly pour your Swedish coffee through the filter and into your cup. And, enjoy!

Conclusion

To sum up, it is not the end of the world for coffee lovers like us if we don’t have a coffee maker around. But, as you have seen, there are many ways to enjoy that cup of Joe using simple tools and materials that we can find in our household.

Indeed, if you find yourself in a situation where a coffee maker isn’t around, you can always look back and do any coffee brewing methods above.

On the other hand, this pandemic has restricted our outside activities like camping. And, you want to have the same adventure still, try setting up a tent and a campfire outside your home. Then, try to enjoy brewing your coffee the Cowboy way. Believe me; it will make a difference leveling up your coffee drinking experience. At the same time, if you have kids, they’ll surely enjoy this fun and adventure activity outdoors-creating a loving family bonding experience. Just what we need to relieve our stressful pandemic life.

Life hacks on grinding coffee beans without a grinder.

There can never be revitalizing than to start your day with a cup of coffee. Certainly, Fresh is best. Coffee prepared with freshly ground coffee beans brings out its best taste and aroma. But, for whatever reason, there can be times there is no available coffee grinder around to grind your coffee.

Simple Life Hacks on Grinding Coffee Beans Without A Grinder:

 Method 1: Manual Grinding

Elbow power is all you need to grind the coffee beans and enjoy that great cup of coffee. No fancy equipment. No electricity is required. All you need are these simple tools that you usually find in your kitchen and your toolbox.

A. Mortar and Pestle

Mortar & Pestle for Grinding Coffee

I was asked once: Which is the mortar? And, which is the pestle? A mortar is a durable bowl—usually a solid stone like marble, wood, ceramic, and steel. In contrast, a pestle is a heavy tool with a rounded end used for crushing substances like drugs and spices. Mortar and pestle is a simple tool that pharmacists and cooks usually use since ancient times.

Grinding Procedure:
  • Put around 2-3 tablespoons of coffee beans into the mortar.
  • Hold the pestle with your dominant hand. At the same time, hold the mortar firmly with your other hand to keep it in place. Or, you put your other hand on top of the mortar’s mouth while holding it firmly to avoid beans from jumping out while crushing and pounding them.
  • Forcibly crush the coffee beans in a swirling motion starting from the center. Then, swirling around to cover all the beans.
  • Continue the swirling motion while pounding the beans until you get the ground consistency you want.
  • If you want more ground coffee, make sure to empty the first batch. And refill a new set of coffee beans. Then, repeat the same procedure.
  • Mortar and pestle can produce a ground consistency from coarse to super fine.

Note: It will be much better if you’ll be using a mortar & pestle with a lid to prevent coffee beans from jumping off from the mortar. Similar to the mortar & pestle below:

Mortar & Pestle with Lid for Grinding Coffee

B. Rolling Pin

A rolling pin is a long cylindrical kitchen utensil used to flatten or shaped dough, usually used in bread, pastries, and cookies. It is also for crushing crackers and breadcrumbs.

Grinding Procedure:
  • Place a preferred amount of coffee beans inside a thick plastic bag. You can also use a ziplock. But, don’t fully close the bag to let air escape while crushing the beans.
  • Lay the plastic bag over the counter, evenly distributing the beans inside in a single layer.
  • Crush the beans using the rolling pin like a hammer.
  • Once crushed, put the rolling pin in the center. Then, roll it back and forth until you get the consistency you prefer.
  • A Rolling Pin can produce Medium fine to Fine grind consistency.

C. Hammer or Meat Tenderizer

sledgehammer for grinding coffee

You can use an ordinary carpenter’s claw hammer, meat tenderizer, sledgehammer, mallet, or any hammer to grind the beans with these tools. A sledgehammer will be much better than a claw hammer as it has a wider edge for easier and faster crushing of the coffee beans.

Grinding Procedure:
  • Place the desired amount of coffee beans inside a thick plastic bag. You can also use a ziplock. But, don’t fully close the bag to let air escape while crushing the beans.
  • Lay the plastic bag over the counter or a table, evenly distribute the beans inside a single layer.
  • Firmly press down the hammer into the beans to crush them. Do this repeatedly until you get the desired consistency. Don’t pound it.
  • It is better to crush half of the bag first and then do the other half for better consistency.
  • You’ll usually get a coarse to medium consistency with this method.

D. Knife

Chef Knife for Grinding Coffee

The wider the blade of the knife, the better it is for coffee grinding. Consequently, a chef knife or a butcher knife will be the best choice as the broad blade can cover more beans making the job faster and easier.

Grinding Procedure:
  • Place the coffee beans inside a thick plastic bag. You can also use a ziplock. Reminder, don’t fully close the bag to let air escape while crushing the beans.
  • Evenly distribute the coffee beans inside the bag in a single layer.
  • Lay the knife over the coffee beans.
  • Crack the beans by pressing the knife’s blade with the heel of your palm. Make sure to cover the entire beans until you get the right consistency.
  • A knife usually produces a medium to medium-fine grind.

Caution: Don’t touch the edge of the blade to avoid accidental cuts.

E. Crepe/Frying Pan

Frying Pan for Grinding Coffee

Now, non-sick or not? Well, it doesn’t matter. Any frying pan will do. But, if you have a crepe pan, that would be better. Why? Because it will be much easier to press in the center. A crepe pan also gives you more elbow to crush your beans as it doesn’t have an edge that will obstruct your hand.

Grinding Procedure:
  • Place the coffee beans inside a thick plastic bag. You can also use a ziplock. Remember not to fully close the bag to let air escape while crushing the beans.
  • Put the beans over the counter or a durable table, making sure they lay in a single layer.
  • Place the pan over the coffee beans.
  • Put your dominant hand’s heel of your palm in the center of the pan. At the same time, you were holding the pan’s handle with your other hand. Now, press the pan’s center to crush the beans until you cover all the beans and get your preferred grind consistency.

Method 2: Mechanical Grinding

This method requires a piece of equipment. Some require the need for electricity. In contrast, other machines require manual operation. Nevertheless, these are equipment that you’ll find inside your home.

Standard Blender

Blender for Grinding Coffee
Hamilton Beach Power Elite Blender

A standard home blender works in the same way as an electric blade coffee grinder, just a bigger version. Some blenders have grind functions, such as the Hamilton Beach Power Elite Blender. However, a blender with no grind setting will also be good for grinding coffee.

Grinding Procedure:
  • Select the grind setting if your blender has this function. If not, set it to the highest setting.
  • Put a small amount of coffee into the blender. Make sure to close the lid to prevent the coffee beans from jumping over the blender’s jar.
  • Grind the coffee beans using the pulse button and grinding in a short burst. About 1-2 seconds until you get the desired consistency. Avoid running the blade continuously as the fast continuous friction will heat the beans, affect their taste, and produce a bitter taste.
  • If you want more coffee grounds, empty the blender. Then, refill it with coffee beans and repeat the same procedure.
  • You can achieve a coarse grind consistency with the blender.
  • Clean the blender’s jar as soon as you finish grinding to avoid the aroma and taste of the coffee beans sticking in the jar, affecting other substances’ taste when you reuse the blender.

Check Price on Blenders

Food Processor

A Food Processor can accommodate more coffee beans than a blender. But, it works in the same manner as a blender as it chops the beans. It will not produce the same grind consistency as a burr grinder. But, your coffee will be much better than stale coffee as you’ll still be using freshly ground coffee beans.

Grinding Procedure:
  • Put a few scoops of coffee beans inside a food processor.
  • Using the pulse technique, grind the beans in a short burst to avoid the beans from heating.
  • To grind more coffee grounds, empty the blender. Then, refill it with coffee beans and repeat the same procedure.
  • Same with the blender, the food processor will give a coarse grind consistency.
  • Disassemble and immediately clean the food processor after grinding to avoid coffee’s taste and aroma sticking in the processor.

Hand Mincer (Meat Grinder)

Grinding Procedure:

A Hand Mincer. also called a Meat Grinder, is an excellent alternative to grinding coffee. The usual hand mincer is steel. But, there are now available durable manual plastic meat grinders that are lighter but as capable as their steel counterparts. Moreover, there is now an electric mincer for easier grinding.

  • Make sure that the mincer is clean. You don’t want your coffee grounds to come out with ground pork.
  • Before you start grinding, don’t forget to put a bowl under the exit of the mincer.
  • Place a small number of coffee beans into the mincer.
  • For a Manual Mincer: Start turning the mincer’s arm until all coffee grind has come out.
  • For an Electric Mincer: Turn on the mincer to start grinding until all the coffee grind has come out.
  • Repeat steps 1 and 2 continuously if your grounds are too coarse for your brewing method. Run them through the mincer again until you’ve achieved the ground consistency you prefer.
  • For an Electric Mincer: Don’t forget to turn off the unit after grinding if it doesn’t shut down automatically.
  • Clean the mincer after grinding to prevent the coffee’s taste and aroma from sticking on the mincer.

Check Price on Mincers

Immersion Blender (Hand Blender or Stick Blender)

An Immersion Blender, also known as a hand blender or a stick blender, can perform the tasks of blending, emulsifying, whipping, and crushing.

Grinding Procedure:

Attach/insert the wand into the chopper attachment. Most immersion blender’s wand turns clockwise until it snaps into place.

  • Place the beans into a tall and narrow stainless steel or glass container
  • Put coffee beans into the container. Around two tablespoons for a cup of coffee.
  • Insert the blender into the container and cover the top with your hand to prevent the beans from jumping out.
  • Start grinding the coffee by turning on the immersion blender.
  • Blend the beans for about 20 to 30 seconds. Stop grinding at 10 seconds intervals to check the grind progression. Stopping the grind also prevents the beans from heating up.
  • Continue until you get the right grind consistency.
  • Rinse and wash the immersion blender and container right away to remove the coffee aroma and taste, sticking to the blender’s wand and container.

Conclusion

While there are tools/pieces of equipment made specifically for grinding coffee, there are life hacks that we can do to savor still and enjoy that great cup of coffee. Always remember, there is nothing like a freshly grounded cup of coffee. Enjoy!

We present you with the best manual coffee grinders. Wait! We are in the age of the Millenials. In today’s past-faced world, almost everything is done rapidly with just a push of a button. So, why will you go manual in grinding your coffee? Is it worth it? Let’s take a look at the advantages of using a manual coffee grinder.

Advantages in using a Manual Coffee Grinder

It is Therapeutic

Homebrewing is for beer lovers. On the other hand,  coffee grinding is for coffee lovers. It may be psychological, but there’s magic in using a manual coffee grinder. Some people describe it as their morning ritual. While others say, it’s their meditation. As you manually grind your coffee beans, the experience creates a personal connection between yourself and the coffee you’re preparing. Firstly, the sweet, intense bouquet of coffee starts with grinding the beans. The fragrance received by our sense of smell is one of the pleasant experiences we get in doing it. As some studies have shown, the mere smell of coffee can give you a brain boost. Moreover, the caffeine in coffee produces positive mental alertness.

Manual coffee grinders give us time to disengage from the digital world—a time to connect with ourselves.

Less Expensive

Manual Grinders are less expensive than electric grinders. You can have a reliable manual coffee grinder at less than $30. Sure, there are high-end manual grinders priced at more than $100. But, this price is far away more affordable than a  $500 equally good electric coffee grinder. And, that doesn’t mean lesser in performance and quality as manual grinders produce uniform grind size.

Less Noise

Manual coffee grinders are far quieter than electric grinders. Even the most silent electric coffee grinder can produce loud enough noise to disturb someone’s sleep. On the other hand, you can grind with your heart’s content with a manual coffee grinder, not worrying about disturbing or annoying someone.

It Doesn’t Heat Beans.

Because of the slow grinding movement, the coffee beans on a manual grinder don’t heat up. The high-speed grinding of an electric grinder produces unwanted heat that might alter the taste of the coffee grounds.

Mobile and Less Space Consuming

You can take a manual grinder wherever you go. Enjoy the pleasure of enjoying a great cup of coffee wherever you are with a manual coffee grinder. Its simple construction, size, and durability make it a perfect traveler’s companion. Imagine yourself overlooking the surrounding beautiful scenery in the mountains while you savor the aroma and great taste of your perfectly brewed coffee.

Don’t Require Electricity.

With a manual coffee grinder, you don’t have to worry about brownout or finding the perfect place to plug your grinder. Just enjoy the experience of preparing your great cup of coffee. Moreover, it’s more environmentally friendly than an electric coffee grinder as it doesn’t consume electricity.
